Rules specific to Singapore

• Plain white background, free of shadows and reflections.
• Neutral expression, eyes open, no red-eye.
• The photo must not be washed out, blurred or overexposed.
• Every new application needs a new colour photograph — you cannot reuse the previous one.
• Prints for hardcopy submission must be on a matte or semi-matte, non-reflective finish — the exact opposite of Australia, which demands glossy paper.
• Online submissions must be 400 × 514 pixels; jpg, jpeg, heic, heif and png are accepted, up to 8MB per file.
• You may use software to resize the photo to the required dimensions, but you must not alter or enhance the image — modifying facial features is equally prohibited.
• ICA advises against selfies and suggests asking someone else to take the photo; purpose-built passport photo apps are also acceptable.
• Clear glasses may be worn if the eyes remain visible, with no lens glare or frames covering the eyes. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not accepted.

Why passport photos get rejected

• Check framing, lighting and the current application instructions. A correctly sized crop alone does not guarantee acceptance.
