Rules specific to Malaysia

• 35×50mm, with the face 25–30mm from chin to crown — about 50–60% of the photo height.
• Approximately 10mm of white space is required between the top of the head and the upper edge.
• Neutral expression, both eyes open and looking at the camera.
• Taken within the last 6 months.
• The background must be white — do not carry over the light-blue requirement from the Employment Pass; that is a different document with different rules.
• Polaroid photos and selfies are both refused.
• Wear dark clothing that covers the shoulders and chest.
• Women wearing a headscarf must choose a dark one, preferably black, and the whole face must remain clearly visible.
• The forehead must not be covered and hair must not fall across the face or forehead; if you do not wear a headscarf, both ears must be visible.
• No flash glare on the forehead.
• No spectacles, no coloured contact lenses, and no head or hair accessories.
• For online applications the upload must be .jpg and between 100KB and 300KB.

Why passport photos get rejected

• Check framing, lighting and the current application instructions. A correctly sized crop alone does not guarantee acceptance.
