Rules specific to Australia

• Taken within the last 6 months, with no retouching of any kind.
• Two identical prints for a paper application.
• The size is a range, not a fixed value: 35–40 mm wide, 45–50 mm high, with the face 32–36 mm from chin to crown.
• Prints must be produced by dye sublimation — inkjet printers are explicitly not accepted.
• Print on heavy-weight glossy paper, minimum 200 gsm — the exact opposite of Canada, which refuses heavyweight paper.
• Background must be plain white or light grey.
• No glasses unless you cannot remove them for medical reasons. The guidance states plainly that vision impairment alone is not an acceptable reason.
• If you normally wear a hearing aid, you may wear it in the photo.
• Anyone over 3 must face the camera straight on, eyes open, neutral expression; under 3, the mouth may be open.
• A religious head covering is fine, but it must not obscure any part of your face — especially around the eyes, mouth and nose.

Why passport photos get rejected

• Check framing, lighting and the current application instructions. A correctly sized crop alone does not guarantee acceptance.
