Layered extrusion needs clear, flat-color shapes with defined edges. Photos are made of thousands of gradient pixels, so tracing them produces a noisy mess rather than a clean 3D object. If you upload a photo, the tool tells you honestly instead of producing a bad result — for photos, try Image to SVG for a posterized vector effect, or keep them as compressed raster images.
SVG is best — vector shapes extrude directly with no tracing step. Next best is a PNG with a transparent background and flat colors. JPGs and logos on solid backgrounds work too, but the background may become part of the model; the tool warns you when a transparent version would do better.
